Primary Seven Newsletter Autumn Term 2019

The Primary 7 class are working fantastically well this term and are enjoying the ‘It’s a Disaster’ topic. Mr Tomlinson is teaching the class on Mondays and Tuesdays, with Mr Carlisle teaching on the other three days. The class will be focusing on the following areas of work this term:

World Around Us

 

Our theme this term is – It’s A Disaster!

·         We are focusing mainly on natural disasters in September and October, (Earthquakes, hurricanes etc) and will be focusing more on man-made disasters after the Halloween break.

·         Our STEM work will be focusing on investigating the strength of structures (Bridges, towers etc)

Mathematics and Numeracy

·         Revising over the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and using these operations to solve word problems

·         Angles of triangles and four sided shapes

·         Number sequencing and patterns

·         Revising times tables

·         Fractions and decimals – converting from one to the other

·         Area and perimeter of squares and rectangles

·         Volume and capacity

Speaking and Listening

We will be continuing to follow the ‘Complete Spelling Programme’ with one of the night’s homeworks focusing on the spellings for the week.

Pupils will be working on differentiated guided reading activities and individual Accelerated Reading at school and at home. Reading comprehension activities linked to our ‘It’s a Disaster’ topic will take place.

The genre we are focusing on for writing this throughout the term is instructional writing. We have a six step approach to teaching the different genres starting from familiarisation to actually using the genre to write independently. We will also be continuing with creative writing and poetry throughout the term.

Pupils will present in front of the class, speaking through their ‘It’s a Disaster’ powerpoint presentations. In our PATHS work we will be having small group discussions focusing on Making Good Decisions and Problem Solving.

PDMU/PATHS Programme

Our PATHS themes for this term are Handling Stress, Making Good Decisions and Problem Solving. Children will be looking at strategies for managing their own emotional responses to situations, using small group discussions, story prompts and problem solving activities. The children are enjoying the ‘Pupil Of The Day’ aspect of PATHS, which includes compliments from peers and adults.

ICT

 

This term we are using Publisher, Powerpoint and Word to produce posters, presentations and reports linked to our WAU topic and to Halloween and Christmas.

Children will also be developing their coding skills using the ‘Scratch.’ programme

P.E

Games – We are focusing on throwing and catching skills and using a bat and ball. We will be demonstrating these skills through small sided team games.

The Arts

·         Looking at the work of Graffiti Artists and creating art work in their style.

·         Christmas card designs

·         ‘CHARANGA’ music programme
