Through the excellent support of our PTFA as well as sponsorship from Eglish Wind Farm, we have invested in resources that prove just how much fun maths can be. “It has been difficult to get me out of the classrooms this week!” said Mr Tomlinson. “Getting involved in the pupils’ practical maths learning is much more fun than my office work!” The Primary Seven Teacher, Lisa Campbell, has been impressed with the levels of engagement of her pupils, and believes that the children’s communication, thinking skills and problem solving abilities are enhanced through an innovative maths curriculum supported by emerging technologies. “The enjoyment, enthusiasm and willingness to have a go at solving problems has been evident throughout the maths week activities, and of course, the point of this week is also to highlight the way we approach the maths curriculum throughout the year.”
Maths week at Cumber Claudy has involved pupils from the foundation stage right through to Primary Seven. Monica Smallwood, the primary One Teacher, has been focusing on learning about numbers through rhymes, and have had lots of fun using toys and games to develop counting skills. The use of stories in the early years has also been an effective starting point for maths investigations. Jack and the Beanstalk has provided a range of interesting measuring activities for our Primary Two pupils.
Mr Tomlinson has been impressed by the commitment the staff have shown to maths week. “Innovative, interesting maths work has been evident in every classroom and has allowed teachers to focus on ideas and strategies which will enhance the maths curriculum for months and years to come.”
